Produced by Jeffrey Best’s Best Events, Sally Horchow’s 40th birthday mini-festival, Burning Woman, was a lavish event for 200 invited guests at White’s Landing on Santa Catalina Island near Los Angeles.

Steve Nalepa and I rocked the blacklight-illuminated dancefloor from just after dark until 2am. The visuals were a mix of audio reactive Max patches and Quartz Composer compositions along with video clips mixed in VDMX.

Nalepa Dub Orchestra at The Echo

The Nalepa Dub Orchestra closed out a smashing evening with The Delta Mirror at The Echo.

Nalepa was joined by former and current students: Morgan Beckett, David Streit, Esther Yim, and Andrew Swanson. The group played their tightest set to date, rocking the post witching hour crowd. I mixed video throughout the nine tracks, and an encore Cassette Wolf jam.

1320 Records showcase - Low End Theory

Made an onstage appearance at Low End Theory, VJing alongside the 1320 Records showcase. Residents Nobody and Daddy Kev got the room warmed up.

The 1320 Records artists turned the club into a sweat drenched sauna. FuzZ was up first, gyrating to his own beats like he was possessed by The Gaslamp Killer. St. Andrew took it a step farther, punishing the collective eardrum of the room. Virtual Boy brought it back to 1982. I dug out my Atari Video Music special for the occasion. The Nalepa Dub Orchestra headlined with 10 members crammed onto the Low End stage. They ran through the highlights of Nalepa’s Flatlands and ended with some brand new material that had the room jumping.

The more than excellent Dillon Morris manned a live camera that was added to the video mix.

Bicycling Blind

Bicycling Blind, is built with Drupal 6 to serve the community of visually impaired bicycle riders. The site is designed to provide a safe space for visually impaired “stokers” and sighted “pilots” to find each other and organize tandem bike rides. Registered users of the site can make use of location based search to find potential partners. Rating and feedback systems are implemented to help build and strengthen the community.

Duncan Laurie’s personal website has been updated and expanded. The original site was built in 2006 with Drupal 5. The new site is built on Drupal 6 with a completely customized theme designed to reflect and extend the look of Duncan’s recently published book, The Secret Art.

GRAMMY Museum

Interactive music and video players for Elvis and Michael Jackson exhibits at the GRAMMY Museum at L.A. LIVE. The players were built in openFrameworks to run on Windows Vista and rely on VIP Touch Foil for user input.

ESPN Zone

A Quartz Composer based RSS feed acquisition and display system shown on four flat screens in the main viewing room at the Los Angeles ESPN Zone. The QC patch queries a MySQL database using William Cotton’s MySQLPatch. Control of the system is via a custom web application running on a MAMP stack.

Scratch built PHP and MySQL control interface for a multi-screen sports feed visualizer. The feed items are shown on four big screens in the main viewing room at the Los Angeles ESPN Zone. Yahoo! Pipes is used to combine and sanitize related sports feeds. The web application based control system allows the staff to enable RSS feeds for different sports leagues. They are also able to upload graphics to display at intervals over the feeds. The Quartz Composer based back-end for the system is described in more detail on the works page for ESPN Zone.
